Nancy is a gorgeous long-haired brown tabby, about 4 years old. She's has a touch of white on her chest and gold eyes. Nancy had a tough time before coming to OMC. She was pulled from Manhattan's ACC in February 2021. Readers should note we're still learning about Nancy and this information is based on our best estimate.
Since being with OMC, Nancy has slowly grown more trusting of people. She began very fearful, hissing when people got close and swatting (without claws) if a person got too close to her (within 3 feet). But since then she's grown in confidence. She exchanges eye blinks, loves to follow people around the house, and comes running for treats and rubs against legs. Nancy does seem to want to bond with an owner, and we predict that in time she'll become a social, attached cat, happy to hang out close to her person/people. It will take time, though, before she'll feel ready for 'typical' cat things like petting, holding, or grooming.
Currently, Nancy accepts brief ear scratches and some petting on her neck. If your hand is right in front of her face, she will attempt to nip/nibble it. She does not bite otherwise. Right now, Nancy is still wary of petting on her body or any grooming attempts. These will result in hissing and swatting, but often with claws retracted. Once she's given a few feet of space she calms down. It appears that Nancy had bad prior experiences with people and she's also dealing with coat mats that she won't yet let us remove. She may be a cat that gets easily over-stimulated or it could be due to bad experiences and her coat pinching when she's touched. If she's upset (another cat spooked her or a noise outside) and a person is standing close, she may swat and hiss in anger, but does not do this unprovoked. Her behaviors seem motivated by fear, not aggression, and if she can retreat to her room she calms down quickly.
Nancy is highly intelligent, like all MCs, and has quickly worked out this home's routine. She can also figure out how to open sliding doors, like to the closet, and likes to explore. She also LOVES playing with wand toys and chasing treats and her latest favorites include watching out a window or stalking toys in a play tunnel. I definitely recommend a short, predictable play session for Nancy as it helps with her confidence and bonding with people. (And definitely check out her "meerkat" pose video when she reacted to some unusual street noises). Another funny habit is that she refuses to eat out of a bowl and insists on a plate for her kibble and wet food.
We think Nancy would be very happy as an only cat. With patience and time, she would probably adjust to a home with cats, provided those cats left her alone. She does not seem to seek out cats for play or company. Presently, Nancy tolerates supervised time with this home's resident cats (two laid back males), but hisses if they get too close or near her stuff. It is possible she could adjust to a quiet dog who would ignore her, but there are no dogs in this home so we can't test that easily.
With a new home or other pets, it is vital that Nancy have a very slow adjustment period. Probably because of bad experiences, it takes her much longer than some cats to adjust to new spaces and new people. An ideal forever home for Nancy will have cat-experienced and patient people who are willing to wait for Nancy to offer affection on her own terms and not push her too fast. For this reason, we would recommend a home with older kids or adults only.
Nancy is presently in good health and up to date on vaccinations.
